Kenya completes its section of a 2 GW transmission line to Tanzania
Kenya has completed the construction of its 93 km segment of the 2 GW Kenya-Tanzania power transmission line.
The 508 km project, valued at KES43bn (US$310m), allows the two countries to sell excess electricity to one another and to import hydropower from neighbouring Ethiopia.
In addition, it will enhance regional connectivity by linking the East African and Southern African electricity pools.
Commissioning of the 400 kV transmission line is scheduled by the end of 2023 after the installation of meters.
Both Kenya and Tanzania were net importers of electricity, with respectively -0.3 TWh and -0.1 TWh in 2021, whereas Ethiopia was a net exporter, with + 1.7 TWh.
